Launched in February 1991 by editor Jeanne Cavelos, the Dell Abyss imprint was a deliberate antidote to the fading, cliché-ridden 1980s horror boom. Instead of haunted houses, ancient burial grounds, or killer toys, Abyss championed visceral, boundary-pushing, highly psychological “splatterpunk” and literary dark fiction. It focused heavily on internal trauma, transgressive themes, and the monstrosities of the human mind.

In this episode, I’ll discuss this remarkable series of paperbacks that lasted only 4 years, but strongly impacted the horror genre. My co-host is Ben Rubin, who is the Horror Studies Collection Coordinator and the University of Pittsburgh’s Library Special Collections.

We will discuss who edited the series, why it was so special, authors published and point out some of the most important books in the line. And, lastly, we’ve discuss the Ben’s job at the Horror Special Collections section of the library.

Collector’s Note: The spine of every true Dell Abyss book is instantly recognizable by its minimalist black backdrop and the distinctive, iconic Abyss logo—a stylized, bleeding, or fluid geometric vortex/crescent—which became a badge of honor for horror fans looking for something genuinely weird and uncompromising.
